Recap: Mystical Fandoms - The Fool

I was so excited to have my good friend Tracey back on EYE of the SEER this past Tuesday!  Like me, Tracey is a huge Geek who takes her fandoms very seriously.  Sherlock, Supernatural, Star Wars, Doctor Who – we’ve stayed up until dawn, freaking out over them all.

Tracey joined back in March to talk about mysticism, archetypes, and fandoms.  We had such a great time on that show, but we realized it was definitely not enough time to even scratch the surface!  After that introductory show, we decided to invite Tracey back as a regular guest, introducing Mystical Fandoms as a regular segment on EYE of the SEER.  And to correspond to our tarot class over at, we decided to follow the Fool’s Journey through the major arcana of the tarot.

Our most recent Mystical Fandoms show focused on the Fool, the sacred goofball of blind luck and intuitive wisdom.  Tracey started the show talking about Harry Potter, who is the epitome of blind luck.  I’m not deep in the Harry Potter fandom, but I appreciated talking about something outside of my scope of geekery.

I brought up the Eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who, primarily post-regeneration Doctor, right after Doctor Ten becomes Doctor Eleven.  As the Fool is the ouroboros, looping around and a round, the snake perpetually eating himself, the Doctor dies, is reborn, dies, and begins again through each and every regeneration.  Like us in our own lives, the Doctor is all archetypes at once, with no real beginning or ending.  The number corresponding to the Fool is Zero, which is no number at all.  When we count we begin with one, so the Fool exists in this strange place after the world, before the Magician.  He is all things and no things, embodying the luminal space in between all spaces.  This particular topic reminded me a lot of content in our book, and it was great to be able to have this discussion with two talented and knowledgeable folks.
We also talked about Frodo from the Lord of the Rings, who embarks on a literal journey.  He steps off into the unknown, just like the iconic Fool of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck.  +Bryan pointed out that the whole Lord of the Rings saga in itself is an unfolding of the tarot deck – magicians, towers, Priestesses – it’s all there!

We also had a great discussion of the Fool’s Journey verses the Hero’s Journey, bringing up Simba from the Lion King.  Another blessed, lucky fool, he manages to fulfill his birthright, despite his running away and initial denial of his quest.

I’m not sure when our next Mystical Fandoms show will be, but stay tuned and check out EYE of the SEER often.  We are always booking and scheduling new shows and new topics.  They’re all exciting, so you don’t want to miss even one!

Thanks to +Bryan, who it’s always a pleasure to talk to on EYE of the SEER, and thanks to Tracey, who makes it all a real treat.  You guys are the best!  And see you next time for the Magician, only on Mystical Fandoms on EYE of the SEER!
