Pagan Blog Project – week 22 – K#2 – The Kubeleyan Mother

Honestly, there isn’t much I can say about Kybele. Though she made an appearance in my life almost a year ago, she’s remained pretty distant and elusive. A loving presence, yes, but still an enigma.

Known to many as Cybele, the Mountain Mother has a few really fascinating stories. These mainly seem to involve sex, lust, longing, castration, blood, dancing, tambourines, and other fun things. Her origins are Phyrgian or Thracian or Minoan, where she is often related to the Mother of the Gods, Rhea. Some scholars have traced her cult back to one of the oldest of all human cities, Çatalhöyük.

I know her as the Great Mother, Queen of Heaven and of Earth, MOTHER OF US ALL, Queen of the Universe, and Momma. She is said to have cured Dionysus of his madness, or at least, helped him transform his “bad” madness into a “good” madness. Thusly, many of the rites of Dionysus have strong similarities to those of the Kubeleyan Mother.

She wears a crown, has adorable toes, loves drums and tambourines, glitter, dark chocolate, lions, and pomegranates. She enjoys dancing and Gender Queer folks. (I mean, honestly. Who doesn’t?) One of her Roman festivals, the Megalesia, just so happens to be on my birthday. And her priests make an appearance in one of my all-time favorite ancient texts, The Golden Ass.

Though she’s not as popular as other deities on Neo-Paganism, she is honored in the hearts of many, and even has her own sacred space in the United States at the Maetreumof Cybele. Unfortunately the Maetreum has been fighting an on-going battle:

For eight long years now they have fought our legally mandated property tax exemption forcing us to court to fight for legal parity with every other church in our community.  A community that routinely grants full exemption to Catholic picnic grounds but not us.   Our story has been covered in Pagan circles for years as well as our local press and even by the New York Times.  We lost our initial court case, appealed to Appellate level where we won an unanimous four judge decision.
For thousands of years, Kybele has been countless things to countless people, and I am truly blessed to have our Mountain Mother in my life. She greets me every morning and every night. She is with me when am I with clients and I pray to her so that they might find relief from their “madness”, in whatever form that has taken for them and their families.

And it is to Magna Mater that I offer my thanks and blessings.

Pagan Blog Project - week 17 - I - Ishtar (who cannot be contained by the grave!)

Pagan Blog Project - week 17 - I - Ishtar (who cannot be contained by the grave!)

This was originally read for Wyrd Ways Radio as part of a devotional ritual to honor the Graveyard Gods. The Graveyard Gods are a list of dieties who were used by a publicity stunt by a group of campus atheist.

For Isthar, who cannot be contained by a grave!

Ishtar, who is also called Inanna and Astarte
Who has endless names unknown or unspoken
Who is also called Queen of Heaven and Queen of the Earth
and Mistress of All the Universe

As the evening and morning star
You shine on us as the sun is setting
Your light carries us through the night and through our darkest hours
You shine on us when the sun is rising
Your light adding to that of the day and to our brightest hours.

With a crown of stars, of gemstones, of a million leaves, petals, and horns
You rule over all the realms
And it is an honor, indeed, to be ruled by you.

You decorate your breast with stars
with lapis, agate, and pearls the color of the brightest rainbows
But it is you who give jewels and the cosmos their luster
For even naked and alone and hung up on a meat hook in the underworld
You are still the most treasured beauty of both heaven and of earth.

For ages unto ages, poets have given their words to you
But one poem is not enough
Nine prayers are not enough
50,000 words are not enough
Seven epics are not enough
To contain your glory

And so shine on, glorious Queen, mistress, and Goddess.
May your brightness never fade
And may we always appreciate the bright blessings and dark lessons you bestow upon us all.

Pagan Blog Project - week 6 - C#1 - Crowns and Circlets

not my favorite style, but don't you just love the stars?
Pagan Blog Project - week 6 - C#2 - Crowns and Circlet

Because of my recent studies of the Queen of Heaven/Earth/The Universe/MOTHER OF US ALL, I've been a little obsessed with the idea of crowns, headdresses, tiaras, and circlets. Why don't we all wear one of these things all the time? They're so great!

They're beautiful! They're elegant! They're classy! They're historical! Why did crowns ever go out of style?

not a crown, but still lovely!
Many goddesses of antiquity are crowned, often with stars, moons, flowers, or horns. Inanna is given a crown to show her sovereignty over civilization. Sometimes it is made from stars, flower petals, horns, moons, or all of the above. Cybele wears something similar, as does Isis and even the Blessed Virgin Mary. Artemis is often depicted with a crescent moon, and Hera wears a queenly tiara.

Some Pagans will wear circles or headdresses in ritual, but I'm a little sad that none of my groups ever do this. (Or if they do it's very rarely.) Maybe it seems a bit archaic or inappropriate or too hierarchical or something?

In traditional covens the High Priestess would often wear a crown or circlet. Maybe modern Pagans are pulling away from this tradition and any associations with more structured coven/circle/etc structure, and because of this have pulled away from the idea of wearing headdresses during ritual? None of my Pagan friends and family are really "traditional" in any sense, so I could really see them rolling their eyes at the idea of wearing a circlet during ritual.

But I think a headdress can be a fun addition to a ritual. They really making the participants feel good and pretty and maybe even contribute to the specialness of the energy, further setting the ritual apart from mundane reality and the "time away from time, space away from space" aura of ritual in general.

On Beltane, though, I try to have at least some type of headdress for everyone involved.
The Maiden gets a crown of flowers, because flowers, like our youth, are fleeting. The Queen gets a crown that is (in theory) passed down from queen to queen (the former maiden becomes the queen.) (To be honest, I've had to buy the Queen's crown a few times. We all have the best intentions, I suppose.) The Crone gets a witch's hat, because regardless of our age, our wisdom is something we carry with us. The Green Man gets a crown made of some type of wild greenery, because that's awesome.

I tried to make this own once. It was a disaster.

Gathering and making these items has really become a special task, and I think everyone really enjoys wearing something extravagant for an already extravagant ritual (isn't Beltane the best?)

Of course I can wear a crown or circlet in the privacy of my own solitary rituals. What's to stop me from being so awesome?

I'm never as crafty as I pretend I am, though. The one time I tried to make a crown for myself out of wire I ended up with a jester's type hat. Now, that ended up being kind of appropriate for the ritual I was hosting, but I really had my heart set on being a majestic Queen, and not a holy Fool. But then again, these things have a way of working themselves out, I suppose...
something seasonal, and it looks good on men, too!

Go ahead and put on a crown. Do it for realsies.
